Carbide is hard and durable, but most importantly, it stays sharp for longer periods of time than most other metals. While too brittle and expensive to be used for the entire tool body, carbide is the ideal tip for saws blades, routers, lathe bits, and drill bits. I recommend seeking out carbide tipped saw blades and routers if you plan on doing serious metal or wood working. The following is some basic information you should know before considering or selecting a carbide-tipped tool.

Carbide is both highly heat resistant (melting point of 2,870 °C / 5,200 °F) and extremely hard (8.5–9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.)

Carbide tipped saw blades have a longer “tool life” than basic steel tools because of their extreme durability. This is especially relevant for higher speeds and feeds associated with more aggressive machining. If you plan on using your tool frequently on hard or dense materials, carbide tips are a must.

Carbide tipped tools are slightly more expensive, but they stay sharp anywhere from ten to twenty times longer than a simple steel tip.

Carbide tips are also less likely to crater when machining more abrasive materials.

Because of its strength, carbide sharpening requires a specific type of abrasive, preferably something coated in diamond or a carbide abrasive wheel.

C-2 carbide tips are used for cutting non-ferrous materials such as cast iron.

C-5 carbide tips are used for cutting steel materials.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. Here are some tips for making your home festive.

Just because it’s old, doesn’t mean it’s lost its luster. Every year stores push new holiday décor. If your budget permits and you feel the need, you can always buy new decorations, but I am a firm believer that decorations become more valuable the longer they are with your family.

Think about your home and select décor that fits in. Whether your home is traditional or modern, it’s best to choose decorations that meld well with your home’s personality and color scheme. For example, use twinkly glass, silver and white lights in a more modern, white-wall environment. Likewise, coppers, bronzes and golds will enhance an earth tone abode. If your home is more contemporary, using repetition and symmetry with decorations has a really nice impact. For example, 5 glass Christmas trees in various sizes looks both festive and modern. For more traditional homes, I suggest using nostalgic items in whimsical colors to add some holiday charm to the space.

Hang lights indoors. Christmas lights have a way of transforming a room. You can use the same technique as outdoors lights by using simple light clips or hooks. Be forewarned, you may need to caulk some holes when the holidays eventually pass. A better option may be temporary adhesive hooks (they even make suction cup hooks for windows), though these occasionally pop off at random moments so be prepared for a little upkeep.

Use nature to celebrate the holidays. Gather branches and pine cones and display them with ornaments and ribbons around your home. Choose red and white flowers to give greenery some contrast. Put cranberries and water in a glass bowl or vase and float a few candles on top.

Don’t be afraid of color. Red and green are traditional, convenient and easy, but it’s more visually interesting to have some color variety. Metallics and gem colors looks great mixed in. After all, you want to look like a home, not a theme corner at a department store.

Choose a few focal points. Choose a spot or two, such as the tree, a table, or the fireplace mantel, to draw focus to. Increase the texture and color found in that area.

Happy Holidays!

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. Here are a few tips to make outdoors holiday decorating a successful, head-ache free process.

Take stock of the outdoor space you are decorating. It’s easy to just jump into decorating, but chances are you’ll get something wrong and regret it. Avoid that frustration by doing a quick walk through of the yard. This will help you know where your power sources are and how you want to organize your décor. This is also a good time to check that all your electrical outlets are working.

Sparkly is good, sparks flying are not. Don’t be afraid to retire some of your older, broken decorations, especially very old electronic ones as they may pose a fire hazard.

Light up the neighborhood. Outdoor lights are probably my favorite aspect of holiday décor. Besides the strands of lights (use LED lights if you can as they last longer), you will need light clips, nail on wire clips, some heavy duty extension cord, a hammer or cordless drill, and a tape measure. For thorough instruction, I recommend checking out Hometips.com for some really helpful illustrated instructions.

Secure roof decorations. Trust me, the last thing you want is to see this holiday season is your plastic Santa flying off the roof and conking your neighbor. Make sure anything rooftop is securely tied down and can resist strong winter winds.

Get Creative. You can easily cut and paint wooden silhouettes for the front yard. Local craft stores offer inexpensive patterns. Simply trace a pencil around the silhouette on some ply board, use a hand held jig saw to cut out the image, then paint the board anyway you want. You can make these cute, nostalgic, religious, or even funny… just make sure it reflects your family’s personality.

Keep the snow line in mind. If you live in a snowy area, keep in mind that lawn statues may be covered at some point. Elevate statues on boxes or crates to avoid being covered. Of course, if the snowfall is minimal, you can also simply dig them out and resituate them.

Happy Holidays!

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. They can be added just about anywhere, from the garage to your living room, bathroom, bedrooms or kitchen. Line the shelves with storage baskets to conceal clutter, or display decorative items, children’s toys, or books. The options are virtually endless. Plus, floating shelves can be finished in a multitude of ways to accommodate any decor. Use a bright paint color to contrast the wall and have a modern pop, or use a classic wood stain to create a rustic, traditional feel. Creating floating wall shelves is such a simple carpentry project, that even a novice can tackle it.

All you need for this project is wood, a tape measure, sandpaper, a leveler, a jig saw, L brackets, varnish, and wood stain or paint and paint brushes. When you are ready to go, simply follow these instructions:

First you must determine the shelving dimensions. The standard thickness for a shelf is 1”, but you can create shelves of any length or width, depending on your needs and the space you have.

Once you have determined the dimensions, measure the wall space with your tap measure, transfer the measurement to the wood, and then cut the wood to the required length using the jig saw.

Use the sand paper to smooth out the jagged edge left behind by the jig saw. This will give your shelf a clean, smooth finish. If the wood is jagged on other edges, smooth those out as well.

Stain or paint the entire shelf before attaching it to the wall. Wood may require more than one coat of paint. Be sure to let the paint dry completely before applying a second coat.

Once the paint or stain is completely dry, apply varnish. This will give the shelf a protective finish that minimizes day-to-day wear and tear. If you want the shelf to be glossy, apply a second coat of varnish. You should gently sand the shelf between varnish coats to ensure a smooth finish.

Attach the L brackets to the shelf first. I recommend spacing them every 24” for a stronger, more stable shelf.

Now attach the shelf to the wall. I recommend using a leveler to ensure the shelf is perfectly even.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. After all, you can only pile everything into the garage for so long before you can no longer park the car in there. Here is a quick list of inexpensive home storage projects that will make life a little easier and maybe even make some room for your car in the garage.

Invest in multifunctional furniture. Some favorites of mine include ottomans with secret storage compartments, beds with built-in drawers, and the classic Murphy bed which tucks away into the wall, making your guest room twice as functional.

Add hooks to doors and unused wall space. These can be used for belts, ties or shoes in the bedroom, and towels or dishrags in the bathroom and kitchen.

Slide storage boxes under your beds. Attach some wheels for extra convenience.

Store away bed linens in old chests or trunks, then use the trunk as a stylish end-table.

Use pull-out shelves or baskets in deeper cabinets and stackable storage pieces in taller cabinets. These inexpensive additions will allow you to use every inch of your cupboards.

Hang a pot rack in the kitchen and free up significant cabinet space.

Place decorative canisters on the kitchen counter for storing frequently used foodstuff like coffee beans and sugar.

Suspend wineglass racks under cabinets to display your stemware or decorative china. You can also under mount paper towel dispensers and can openers.

Put an inexpensive wine rack in the bathroom to store rolled up towels.

Add sturdy shelving and cabinets to the garage walls. In fact, a basic cabinet can be used just about anywhere to create instant storage. This project requires some carpentry knowledge and electrical power tools, namely a miter or circular saw, a table saw and router, and a cordless power drill. Expect the creation of a cabinet from scratch to take approximately 3 to 4 hours. For complete instructions visit: http://woodworking.about.com/od/woodworkingplansdesigns/ss/cabinets.htm. There are three key factors to consider when selecting your plunge saw: quality, power, and safety.

Quality

I am a big advocate for quality tools. Too many times I have seen quality sacrificed for price… and time and time again, the tool breaks prematurely and the woodworker is forced to purchase a replacement. Besides being a pain, it ends up costing more in the long run. If you truly need your tools, you should not sacrifice quality. Look for good design, superior materials and construction, and a solid warranty. When you test the saw, check for tight tolerances and a smooth plunging action. Make sure the cuts have splinter-free edges and that there are no burn marks left behind.

There are plenty of times when brand name is not an important factor to consider, but this is not one of them. Brand reputation is important. Festool Tools is a personal favorite of mine, but I recommend doing your research. Ask experienced carpenters you know who they are using and whether they are happy. Check around the web and see what people are saying on the message boards about the brand’s service department so you want to buy from a manufacturer that stands behind its tools.

Quality rails are important too. They should be strong, light, and easy to adjust.

Power

This overlaps with quality, but a strong, reliable motor is important when selecting a plunge cut saw. Consider the kinds of material you will be working with most often. If you frequently work with thick, hard woods, more power will be required. If you are working with lightweight materials, a smaller, lighter saw will work just fine. Power ratings can be misleading because some less reputable saw manufacturers only list the peak power of their tool. You need to know the saw’s "continuous power rating under load." That will tell you the true power of the saw while in use.

Safety

Make sure your saw has anti-kickback protection.

I also recommend choosing a saw with Multiple Material Control (MMC) because it offers additional safety as well as performance. MMC allows you precision control over speed and protects the motor from overload and temperature. It also allows you to choose the optimum speed for the type of blade you are using.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. The circular saw’s versatility is partially due to the fact that it can be either table mounted or hand held. For straight cuts, it is recommended that a circular saw be clamped to the wood with a straightedge. This will give you a straight cut akin to a table or miter saw. A quality circular saw will also allow you to adjust the cut depth and angle of the cut.

When choosing a circular saw, there are three central questions you must ask:

What kind of cutting power do you really need? There are two primary types of circular saws to choose from: worm-drive saws and sidewinder saws (also known as in-line saws). The big difference between the two is where the motor is situated and the torque that the motor placement provides.

On a worm-drive saw the motor is placed parallel to the blade which gives the saw considerable power. A worm-drive saw can cut through just about anything, even concrete, making it a popular choice for professional tradesmen. In fact, I would recommend that only professionals use worm-drive saws because of the inherent danger of wielding such a powerful tool.

If you are a more of a hobbyist, the sidewinder is a better alternative. Also known as an in-line saw, it also comes in two varieties, regular and small. A small sidewinder is a good pick for slighter body frames or people who prefer a lighter weight tool. While we are on the topic of safety, I cannot stress enough how important power tool safety is. Be sure to always wear protective gear! Also, I highly recommend a saw that features electric brakes. These “brakes” will reverse electricity flow when the trigger is released. This stops the blade in about two seconds flat and really improves the overall safety of the tool.

Is portability important? Electrical power tools can be cumbersome on the work site. If you want your circular saw to have maximum agility, I would recommend a cordless version. Cordless circular saws eliminate the inconveniences of lunging around extension cords and generators allowing you to easily navigate around a job and save time. With the cordless variety you will have to sacrifice some torque. Also, keep in mind that there is a time limit to any battery.

What kind of features matter to you? Think about the types of projects you plan on doing that will require a circular saw. How deep do your cuts need to be? The saw’s blade capacity dictates the depth of the cut. Obviously, larger blades cut deeper, so make sure the blade is large enough to accommodate your project plans. Now consider how often you will need to change out the saw blade. Will you need to make different depth cuts and change blades frequently? If so, shaft locks make blade changes fast and easy and are worth looking for if you foresee having to make a lot of blade changes.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. If you have a better understanding of your potential client and how they approach the decision making process, you are better equipped to attract their business. My research in this area points to an over-arching theme of consumer fear. The prospects are anxious because, to them, a home remodel is a really big deal. If you are selected, they will pay you a lot of money to do some pretty scary things (well, it’s scary to them) to their largest personal asset. Find ways to address this fear, and you will provide them with a sense of comfort and attract more business. Here are a few tips on how to do just that.

Be patient and answer questions. Question dodging is a clear sign to the buyer that something’s not right.

Be knowledgeable about the process and give them a realistic cost job breakdown.

Provide glowing references.

Be insured and licensed (when appropriate) and be ready to present relevant certifications upon request.

Be punctual to appointments. When you are late, the customer may get that sinking feeling that something’s not “right”. A little bit of doubt can quickly snowball into full blown distrust.

Do not use high pressure sales tactics. This will trigger the buyers fight or flight instinct… Either way, you lose. It is best to present yourself as a knowledgeable ally. Act as though you don’t have to sell hard because your reputation speaks for itself.

You are a professional, act the part. Be polite and have a tidy appearance. Demonstrate that you have an attention for detail by taking good care of your tools and vehicle.

Provide the right paperwork, execute change orders, and return client calls promptly. Long delays in any of these activities will trigger client anxiety.

Leave the job site clean after each work day.

Have good communication. Provide a detailed overview of the work to be completed address the “who, what, when, where and why” of all main aspects of the project, including the important milestones. Always let the client know when utilities will be down.

Bottom line, your potential clients are afraid and they do not trust you. You can earn that trust through certain behaviors and tactics. If you can accomplish that, the business will roll in.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. There are a few fairly fast and easy ways to make your outdoor area more hospitable in the cooler months. All you need to do is organize the yard so that wind and moisture are minimized, and extra warmth is provided. Here are a few tips to make the most of your yard during the cooler seasons and well into spring.

Create a shelter belt. If your outdoor space or patio is highly exposed, determine where most of your frosty winds are blowing from and build a barrier in that vicinity. The most effective barrier is a fence, but if this is a view you do not want to obstruct, small hedges, open-weave fences, and tough trees can help reduce the wind’s severity without blocking the landscape. This barrier will not only make outdoor activities more comfortable, but it can also reduce home heating costs.

Install a heating device. Patio heaters, chimineas, fire pits, or fireplaces are all excellent options for adding a bit of heat to the vicinity. If you have a large area, you may want to use more than one. While they take a little more effort to install, a fire pit or place is a fantastic edition that creates ambiance and allows your family to enjoy activities like roasting marshmallows or just gathering around the fire, which are fun activities year round.

Get the right gear. The right patio furniture will make being outside a pleasure. Look for cushions and pillows that are plush. Have several “outdoor blankets” handy (i.e. blankets clearly designated as appropriate for outdoors use.) Store these inside and wash them once a week or as appropriate for your family’s use.

Consider awnings or canopies. If your outdoor space is exposed, you may want to consider adding a “roof” over the gathering area. This can help minimize moisture. This certainly isn’t necessary for all yards, but can increase the social areas usability in some climate zones. A retractable canopy will allow you to keep the area dry and also view the stars on clear nights.

Now that you have the space, use it! Plan activities, invite over friends, and keep extra marshmallows or hot beverages handy for spontaneous evenings. A nice outdoor gathering area will give your family a delightful place to socialize without the distractions of TV or modern life.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. If you are thinking of giving your outdated kitchen a much needed overhaul, it is important to consider current kitchen trends. This will allow you to create a space not only pleases you and your family, but also appeals to prospective future buyers. Below you will find an over-view of the most current kitchen trends that will help enhance your lifestyle and the value of your home.

The Sustainable Kitchen. Eco-friendly is all the rage these days, but most notably in the kitchen where a few small changes can make a significant impact. You can use inexpensive recycled or natural materials such as recycled glass counter tops or formaldehyde-free bamboo for work surfaces and flooring. Convenient built-in recycling centers and food composters can save space and make recycling simple. The overall idea is making the kitchen effortlessly eco-friendly so that being green isn’t a sacrifice, it’s just an easy part of your everyday life.

Multi-functional Convenience. Since your kitchen remodel should focus on making life easier, multi-functional features are the way to go. Some examples of this trend include sinks with accessories, such as built-in preparation boards, colanders, and/or drain trays. Storage that is both stylish and highly engineered can save you both space and frustration. Cupboard inserts and custom storage areas with adjustable dividers and pull out baskets are big value-adders. Some of today’s homes have appliances set on wheels or movable islands which allow you to easily rearrange the kitchen for convenient preparation, cleaning, and entertaining… which is not just multi-functional, but also kind of fun.

The High-Tech Kitchen. Just like every other aspect of our lives, kitchens are featuring more technology than ever. A lot of this technology is focused on making the kitchen more enjoyable and adding a bit of the “wow” factor. From flat-screen televisions and computer-based entertainment systems to retracting ventilation hoods and gas burners, technology can make the kitchen more fun, convenient, and cool. The kitchen is both a social and functional space in the home. Small additions, like a small mobile device charging station, really illustrate this point. Imagine your family returning home in the evening, immediately plugging in their mobile devices, and congregating in the kitchen to catch up with each other.

The Fresh, Foodie Kitchen. The rising popularity of celebrity chefs and shows like Top Chef help demonstrate a cultural shift towards culinary appreciation and fresh food preparation. The result is the growing popularity of restaurant grade appliances and features that promote fresh, healthy food preparation. Commercial grade stoves are more popular than ever. Filtered faucets and refrigerators with multiple cooling and humidity settings for keeping food fresh longer are in demand. Copper sinks have made a comeback due to their rustic appeal and natural anti-bacterial properties. State of the art food storage and fresh herbs on the window sill are easy, inexpensive ways to incorporate this trend into your kitchen.

The Come-Back of Color and Shape. Unexpected flashes of color and bold shapes are all the rage, and offer a nice juxtaposition to the earthy mellowness of the eco-friendly trend. Colorful paint, tiles or back splashes add some punch to an otherwise monochromatic space. Vivid blues, oranges and corals are particularly popular. Stainless steel appliances are still accepted, but colorful appliances are more cutting-edge, and seem at once both modern and retro. Likewise, unexpected shapes – it could be anything from your windows to accessories purchased at the flea market - add interest and character to your kitchen space. The recent economic downturn and declining real estate market have forced many contractors to close shop. With consumer spending down, there are fewer contracts to bid, making this period, without a doubt, the perfect time for contractors to tighten their belts and carefully consider their business practices. You can’t afford to sit back and wait for things to go back to the way they were in 2005…. because while the economy will eventually recover, consumer attitudes have changed for good. You need to figure out what works in this new economic climate… what saves money, what attracts/retains clients, what is bleeding the company? Get these aspects of your business squared away today and you’ll be more efficient and profitable tomorrow... you’ll probably sleep a little better too.

Attracting customers has always been a tough job. Word of mouth is good, but you had better do some proactive prospecting as well. Traditional ads in the newspaper, fliers, and posters are dated approaches that won’t cut it anymore. Most clients will do their preliminary research online, so you should invest in having an easily-accessible, user-friendly website. Next, you will need to promote yourself online. You have the website; now get on Yelp, Craigslist, Angie’s List, and local contractor portals. Contact local associations and niche publications. Make sure your business is listed where the potential clients are looking. Have a mobile device that you can readily accept calls and check emails on so that you can respond to inquiries quickly. Be easy to find, easy to contact, and easy to do business with.

Consider what message and brand identity you want present in the market. What is your area of expertise? Highlight your strengths and what sets you apart. Reassure your prospective clients that you are a safe bet with testimonials and certifications. On a similar note, it is important to also evaluate what your company stands for. Are you high quality or value? The marketplace has been trending towards customer service, quality, convenience, and eco-friendly themes. Do these themes fit into your business model and marketing message?

Lastly, do an honest audit of your company’s spending. If you can, trim spending on things like office supplies and other meaningless overhead. Focus your capital on the integral pieces of your business, like materials, tools and contract labor. Always use industrial grade gear. Cheap tools do not deliver value because cheap tools break, costing you replacement overhead and time. Your tools are a long-term investment, so always invest in industrial-grade tools. Industrial cutting tools and electrical power tools will provide you superior quality work and long-term savings.

Times are tough for the contracting trade, but if you get the business model right today, you can ensure yourself long-term success and profitability.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading provider of electric and cordless power tools headquartered in Wantagh, New York. They also add significant value to your residence, but adding a fireplace is much easier than you may think. And, as winter approaches, this is the perfect time to install your new fireplace so that you can enjoy its benefits during the cooler months.

The key to an affordable fireplace install is choosing the right type of fireplace. Traditional wood-burning fireplaces with chimneys are not only difficult to install, but they are also inefficient (they actually drain the heat from your home.) If you are considering adding on a fireplace, your best bet is a direct venting gas fireplace. These fireplaces are powered by gas and burn so efficiently that they can be vented directly out of an external wall on your house – no chimney required. They frequently come with a convenient timed remote control for superior climate control and safety. Direct venting gas fireplaces will provide the look and warm glow of a traditional fireplace, but are more convenient, efficient, eco-friendly, and less expensive. They are also easy to install.

What you will need for this project:

A Direct Venting Gas Fireplace. These come in prefabricated packages with thorough installation instructions. You can find quality fireplaces starting around $450.

A reciprocating saw. The primary tool you will need is a reciprocating saw to cut a hole in the wall for the external vent. Use a reputable brand like Milwaukee saws. You don’t want to skimp when cutting into the external wall of your home. Before doing this, thoroughly read your specific gas stove’s instructions and make sure you are cutting the hole to spec.

Construction grade adhesive and sealant. To attach pieces and fill gaps.

2-3 hours. You can install a gas fireplace on your own in around two to three hours. Depending on the style of gas fireplace you select, you may need create a recession, a façade, or add on a mantle. All of these additions will require some additional carpentry and time.

A licensed plumber to connect the gas line. And the end of this project, you will also need to have a licensed plumber attach the gas line (either propane or natural gas.) Always use a professional, licensed plumber when dealing with gas lines.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. Here are some areas of your home you may want to check before the first winter frost:

Windows: Poorly sealed or thin windows allow cold outside air into your home, increasing the workload of your heating system and driving energy costs higher. Insufficient seals around windows can be repaired inexpensively with caulk and/or weather stripping. Older windows are usually thinner than newer ones and provide little insulation against the outside air. Replacing windows is a more costly endeavor but can result in a major improvement in the energy efficiency of a home.

Doors: Like windows, all doors leading to the outside or unconditioned areas like the garage should be checked for drafts. Weather stripping and door sweeps should be intact and in good condition. You may also block air from entering under the door by placing a draft guard along the floor for added protection. Draft guards simply block the opening where the door meets the floor, preventing outside air from coming inside.

Insulation: Home insulation helps keep cold air out and warm air in during the winter. Inadequate insulation allows cold air to enter the home, making it less comfortable, burdening the heating system and increasing energy costs. Some areas to examine for insufficient insulation are the attic, basement or crawlspace, garage and outside facing walls. If you are adding insulation, keep in mind that insulation is classified by its R-value, which refers to its propensity to resist heat conduction, and certain minimum R-values may be recommended depending on your geographic location.

Water Pipes: Frozen plumbing pipes can lead to flooding, inconvenience and repair expenses. In cold climates, water pipes in unheated areas of a home can be wrapped with pipe insulating material to help prevent freezing. In cold climates, outdoor faucets and pipes as well as sprinkler systems should also be checked and treated as needed to prepare for cold winter temperatures. Hoses should be removed and stored indoors, and water drained from the outdoor faucet with the water supply turned off.

Heating system: If your heating system needs to be checked, having it done before the winter arrives is a good idea. Replacing air filters and having the system inspected by a professional regularly will help you get optimal performance from your system.

It can be easy to put off winterizing your home, but preparing for the winter before the cold temperatures arrive can end up saving you a lot of money in the long-run.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading provider of electric and cordless power tools headquartered in Wantagh, New York. The right tool belt will increase your speed and effectiveness by making it easy to move and your tools easy to find. It is important to select the tool belt that is right for your usage to gain maximum efficiency.

First, do a realistic evaluation of your use. Professional tradesmen should go with leather as it is the best quality and will last. If you are less active with your tools, you can consider nylon or canvas belts. Occidental is hands-down one of the best leather belt manufacturers out there. Nothing beats the sturdiness of a quality leather belt, and Occidental Leather Tool Belts are well-known for their superior design and durability.

Next, consider how the belt is designed. Look and feel are important, but functional design is critical. How are the loops and pockets organized? What tools does the belt need to accommodate? What’s going to work best for the type of projects you tackle? You also need to make sure that the belt is weight distributed when holding your tools so that the belt doesn’t sag and annoy you. If your tools are on the heavier side, you may want to also get suspenders which improve the belt’s balance and comfort.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for hand and power tools offering over 70 major brands. While dramatic, his move from derivatives to driver bits makes sense to me. The financial industry is unstable; he has a daughter who could use more daddy time… And well, from the sound of it, woodworking simply makes him happy. He now earns his living creating high-end wood furniture in his garage, using a few simple tools and his ingenuity.

In these high-tech, high-stress times, it’s easy to understand the resurgence in recreational woodworking. From the smell and texture of the wood to the sense of accomplishment that comes with working with your own two hands, Woodworking provides a creative outlet that is satisfyingly visceral. And while most hobbies drain your bank account, woodworking is that rare leisure activity that can actually create value.

If you are considering woodworking as a hobby, there are a few tools and resources that you will need. Start with a solid work bench and measuring tools such as a combination square and simple tape measure. Important electric power tools include the circular saw for straight cuts (a fence guard can improve the saw’s accuracy) and a jig saw for cutting curves. After making the cuts, you will need to shape the wood using either a block plane or router. A standard cordless drill will come in handy and you will also want to have some sturdy clamps and project glue on hand.

As you become more experienced, you may choose to invest in Woodworking machines, which offer more power and precision. Lastly, you will need the essential safety gear, such as glasses, ear protection, and a face mask for eliminating fine dust particles. The web and your local bookstore offer the best project guides and a place to trade ideas with other woodworkers. There are many resources out there, but Popular Mechanics and Fine Woodworking both offer useful guides for beginners.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for hand and power tools offering over 70 major brands. For most people, tackling all of the projects on the list at once would be infeasible, so some prioritizing is in order. We have compiled some tips to help you prioritize your home improvement to-do list in a way that makes sense for your situation:

First address repairs that will incur additional costs if neglected. Any issues with the home that will worsen and cost more money with time should be high priority. Water damage is a good example, as are foundation and roof problems. A water leak left unfixed could mean massive costs down the line, such as replacing water damaged walls and mold remediation. Unfortunately these types of repairs are less exciting than for instance remodeling the kitchen or installing new hardwood floors, but they are necessary for the longevity and value of the home.

Consider any necessary electrical, HVAC and plumbing repairs or upgrades. Ensuring that the mechanical aspects of the home are in working order is another phase of home improvement that may seem less than exciting, but in most cases function takes priority over aesthetics. It would be difficult to enjoy a newly remodeled bathroom without a functional water heater, or to enjoy anything about your home with a broken heater in freezing temperatures. Use your best judgment to determine what mechanical repairs are necessary.

Budget should be considered in planning your home improvement timeline. Your home improvement list probably has a mix of costly and less expensive projects. The financial magnitude of different projects should be considered as you prioritize. Expensive projects may be spaced out according to your financial means, with smaller projects filling the spaces between.

Separate fantasy from reality. There may be one or more items on your list that are more of "I wish I could.." than "I plan to…" There is nothing wrong with aiming high, but distinguishing which projects get the green light and which stay in the wish list category is a part of prioritizing. This does not mean you have to remove your fantasy projects from the list, but rather that it helps to be realistic about them when setting up your project timeline.

Prioritizing the order in which projects should be done and planning a realistic timeline based on your financial situation and the condition of your home can alleviate the anxiety of a seemingly never ending to-do list.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool, a leading dealer and service center for hand and power tools. Instead, they are springing for a modernized style with smaller framed or decorative mirrors. Replacing an outdated mirror is a simple and inexpensive way to give your bathroom an instant update.

Removing a flat bathroom mirror relatively basic as far as home improvement projects go, but it does require patience, preparation and at least one other person to lend an extra helping hand. Removing an attached bathroom mirror without breakage is possible, but precautions should be taken to prevent injury and damage to the bathroom in the event that the mirror breaks. Though we discuss one method of removing a bathroom mirror here, there are several different ways you could go about this project.

Safety
Safety should not be taken lightly when removing a mirror. Safety goggles and thick gloves should be worn, as well as long sleeves and pants to help protect the skin. One person should hold the mirror against the wall while another is attempting to loosen or remove the mirror. Every step of the process should be completed slowly and steadily to reduce the chance of breakage and injury.

Preparation
To prepare for possible breakage, cover the entire mirror with a wide tape such as masking tape or duct tape. Doing so reduces the chance of injury or damage caused by shattered glass. Cover other surfaces in the bathroom to prevent damage and facilitate easier cleanup.

Removal
To remove the mirror, the first step is determining whether the mirror is affixed to the wall with brackets or glue. If the mirror is held by brackets only, one person can push the mirror up toward the top brackets, holding the mirror firmly against the wall, while another carefully removes the bottom brackets. Two or more people can then lower the mirror and carefully release it before removing the upper brackets from the wall.

Most bathroom mirrors are attached with an adhesive. In this case, one technique is to slide shims behind the mirror wherever possible to begin separating the mirror from the wall, and then soften the adhesive with heat. Apply heat to the mirror using a heat gun, or if that is unavailable, a hair dryer should do the trick. Apply heat around the edges of the mirror first, which should soften the adhesive and allow you to insert the shims further or add more. A crowbar can be used to very carefully pry the mirror from the wall in very small increments, gradually working from one end to the other, increasing the thickness of the shims when possible. If you continue to add heat and slowly increase the pressure created by the shims, you and your helper(s) should be able to remove the mirror in one piece.

Once the mirror is down, you can get a better idea of the wall surface you have to work with. Touch ups will be needed before you can paint the wall and apply your new mirror for a modernized look. Now all you have to do is hang your new mirror and you have a brand new look in your bathroom!

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. The pivotal component of a track saw is the metal track that helps guide the saw along a straight and accurate path as the operator makes the cut. The track is placed on the surface to be cut and lined up with the exact line that is to be followed. Track saws can be used to create straight cuts whether they are at a right angle to the surface or a bevel, and reduce or eliminate the splintering that is common when cutting certain materials with other types of hand saws.

One of the benefits of a track saw over a table saw is its portability. Many construction professionals and woodworkers have long turned to stationary table saws for their sheer power and capability of making very smooth cuts. With a track saw, the saw and track can be carried to the location of the materials, eliminating the need to transport materials to the location of a larger stationary piece of equipment such as a table saw. The ability to use a track saw on site can save time and reduce worker fatigue.

Track saws are available with tracks of differing lengths. The tracks in most models can be connected end to end to create tracks of customized lengths, versatility that makes them ideal for a variety of jobs. The bottom of the track will typically be equipped with strips of high friction material, which hold the track in place and eliminate the need to secure the track by clamping or another method in most cases. On certain track saws, this high friction material may need to be trimmed along the length of the track prior to the first use.

As always, it is advised to follow all manufacturer guidelines and safety recommendations when operating all kinds of hand and power tools.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool, a leading dealer and service center for electrical power tools. One relatively simple update that can help save on energy consumption and cost is a tankless water heater. These water heaters utilize a less wasteful method of providing a home with heated water and take up less space in the home than do traditional storage tank water heaters.

A standard water heater keeps a storage tank full of heated water ready, and refills and heats water as it is used or when the temperature falls below a specified minimum level. If the water reaches the minimum temperature before it is used, it is reheated so that a certain temperature is maintained within the tank. It is apparent how a lot of energy can be wasted as unused water is heated and reheated in such a system.

As the name implies, a tankless water heater is a unit used to heat water that has no reservoir. Sometimes called demand water heaters, tankless heaters only heat water when it is needed. A gas or electrically powered burner heats the water when someone in the home turns on a hot water faucet, for instance. When the faucet is turned on, water is moved to the tankless heater, where it is heated, then on to the faucet for use. Since water is not stored in a tank, it is heated on demand, resulting in less wasted energy.

Tankless water heaters have different capacities, so you can install one large enough to heat all of the water for your home or small enough to cover just one bathroom or even one faucet. Tankless water heaters of different capacities essentially increase the water temperature based on its flow rate, so for instance less water would be heated for a faucet than for a bathtub faucet.

There are certainly many ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home with appliance upgrades, and replacing a storage tank water heater with a tankless one is one of them. Strict electrical requirements mean that you will most likely need to hire a professional for having a tankless water heater installed in your home.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the Founder of Ace Tool Online. This will help ensure that you have sufficient quantities of supplies on hand to finish the project, and confirm that the materials you are using are recommended for use with one another. Reading all instructions and recommendations will provide additional insight such as the appropriate trowel to use for your project and whether the tile and grout need to be sealed.

Many experienced tile installers prefer to use mastic as the base adhesive for a vertical backsplash, though your tile may call for a particular type of adhesive. Before adhesive is applied, the wall on which the backsplash will be installed should be lightly sanded and the dust removed to create a rougher surface for the adhesive. The container for the thinset or mastic should designate the appropriate type of trowel to be used in its application.

The backsplash area should be measured, and the first tiles applied at what will be the center of the backsplash. Tiles should be applied to the wall in small sections at a time to prevent premature drying of the adhesive. Tiles should be secured to the adhesive using a twisting motion, with each being checked to ensure that it is level and evenly spaced from adjacent tiles. Inserting spacers is an easy way to achieve consistent spacing between tiles.

As you install tile after tile, you will encounter areas that require tiles to be cut, such as to fit around an electrical outlet. Cutting tiles as you reach such areas, rather than ahead of time, can help ensure the best fit.

Once the backsplash design is complete, the adhesive should be allowed to dry before grout is applied. Grout should be used in small batches so that it does not dry too quickly. Apply grout as described on the product package, wiping excess grout from the tile surface with a clean, moist sponge as you go.

As the grout dries, a film will likely form across the surface of the backsplash. This film can be removed with a soft cloth. To finalize your backsplash, seal the tile and grout if it is recommended for the materials you are using.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading provider of electric and cordless power tools headquartered in Wantagh, New York. Selecting the tile and grout to be used as discussed in Part I is an important phase of the planning process, since the tools needed and method of installation will be determined in part by these products. Having sufficient supply all of the necessary materials available can help a backsplash project go smoothly and prevent delays. Adhering to all manufacturer recommendations for using the tile, grout and other materials will contribute to the best results.

Before purchasing the tile and grout to be used for a backsplash project, perform some background research to ensure that you are using the appropriate materials together. For instance, if the backsplash will be installed behind a stovetop, ensure that the type of tile you are using is suitable for environments with high heat. It is also important to choose grout and mastic that is suitable for use with the tile being used. Another consideration is whether the tile needs to be sealed in order to function best in a kitchen environment. Do not hesitate to ask many questions and read all documentation when selecting and purchasing tile and the other materials you will need for a backsplash project. Purchasing more tile than you think you need is a good idea to account for broken tiles and to give you extra pieces on which to practice cutting.

In order to determine the amount of tile, grout and other supplies needed for a backsplash project, you will need to first determine what area the backsplash will cover. Often, backsplashes span from the top of a counter to the point where they touch the cabinets above. Accurate measurements are important in the planning phase and throughout the process of installing a tile backsplash.

During the planning phase, it is helpful to create a mockup of the layout of the backsplash, preferably to scale. Precise measurements and layout planning will help you achieve a quality final result and minimize surprises along the way. Laying out the tiles in the exact dimensions and design as the final backsplash is a good way to prepare for affixing them to the wall.

Some tiles will need to be cut in order to fit into the space for your backsplash. A wet tile saw, which is designed for cutting tile, can be rented for this purpose, and a scoring cutter can also come in handy. Several tools are available for cutting tile, and the type of tile you are using may determine the best tool to use. The areas of the wall, cabinets and other surfaces which need to be unaffected by the project should be masked off, and any switch and outlet covers should be removed. Power to the outlets should be cut off for safety while you are working in the area.

Part III of this series covers some tips to consider during the process of installing a tile backsplash.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for hand and power tools as well as Occidental leather products. The abundance of tile options available allows homeowners to personalize their kitchen backsplashes to accommodate unique preferences. While a kitchen backsplash certainly presents the opportunity for limitless creative freedom, most homeowners choose a backsplash style that is neutral enough to be appealing to future home buyers.

Here are a few considerations for choosing tile for a kitchen backsplash:

Textures and colors in the kitchen and throughout the home. Incorporating consistent styles throughout a home establishes flow and contributes to a quality overall aesthetic. If the majority of the home utilizes neutral tones and stone textures, you may want to incorporate a similar style into the kitchen backsplash to keep the style consistent. Likewise, a modern glass tile backsplash may be better suited for a home with other elements of modern style and architecture. As with other home improvement projects, a kitchen backsplash should fit seamlessly with the aesthetic of the home.

Maintenance associated with different types of tile and grout. As you shop for tile, keep in mind that some tile requires more maintenance than other types. For instance, porous tiles such as those made of natural stone will need to be sealed and periodically resealed. Be sure to read all manufacturer recommendations for any tile you are considering installing in your home to be sure that it fits with your expectations for maintaining it.

Color and texture of the tile. The colors and finishes of tile are practically endless. A kitchen backsplash in a vibrant color can make a bold statement, and one with neutral tones can create an understated, elegant look. While the color and texture of your backsplash is a personal preference, remember to consider whether you intend to sell the home someday and what future buyers would prefer. If you want to add color but do not want to make the backsplash too personal, you may consider installing a neutral toned backsplash and achieve a bold look through a vibrant wall color, which can be easily changed later. Remember that a tile backsplash should complement the other elements in the kitchen such as the cabinets, countertops and floors.

Once you have chosen the tile and grout that is best suited for your needs and preferences, careful planning is in order before the backsplash can be installed. In Part II we examine some of the steps involved with preparing to install a kitchen backsplash.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for hand and power tools offering over 70 major brands. Here are five mistakes to avoid when operating a circular saw:

Failing to wear the appropriate safety attire. While we wish it went without saying that safety goggles should always be worn when working with a circular saw, many people neglect to follow this basic safety rule. In addition to protecting the eyes, avoiding loose clothing and jewelry that could become caught in a saw is also important. Certain jobs also call for the use of hearing protection and/or a respirator mask for optimal protection.

Using a dull blade. If the blade on a circular saw is too dull, it will place unnecessary strain on both the saw and the operator. A dull blade in a circular saw can be dangerous because of the extra force the operator must apply in order to make a cut, and can also damage the saw by overworking the motor. A blade that has hit a nail is particularly prone to becoming dull, but any blade will become dull with use.

Leaving the saw plugged in. Circular saws should be unplugged at all times when not in use to prevent accidents. Battery operated saws can have the battery removed. Ensuring that a circular saw is unplugged is especially important when changing a blade, lubricating or otherwise maintaining the saw. Essentially, the only time the saw should be plugged into an outlet is while it is in use.

Overextending the body. Maintaining stable positioning is an important responsibility when using a circular saw. Overreaching could cause a saw operator to lose his or her balance and create a dangerous situation.

Using the wrong type of blade for the cutting surface. Different types of blades are available for circular saws to cut different surfaces. One important distinction is the difference between a ripping blade, designed to cut with wood grain, and a crosscutting blade, designed to cut against the grain. There are also blades designed for cutting different types of materials, such as glass, steel, tile or concrete.

Following all manufacturer usage guidelines and safety recommendations when using circular saws and other hand and power tools is advisable. With a few updates, a tired deck can be made into a stylish extension of the home for entertaining, relaxing and dining in one space. If you are ready to spruce up your deck, here are five ideas to get you started:

Refinish and repaint. Repainting or refinishing a deck creates the feeling of a brand new space, and opens the door to changing up colors for a fresh new look. With use of the right products, refinishing a deck can also extend the life of the wood.

Bring the indoors out. Home decorators often say that outdoor space such as a deck should be an extension of the interior living space in a home. Outdoor furniture, drapes, pillows and even appliances make it possible to create a personalized outdoor living area that provides the same functionality and comfort as the indoors.

Add planters. Plants bring new life into any indoor or outdoor space. Creating the feeling of nature on your deck will make the space more welcoming and relaxing. Planters can also be strategically positioned to create privacy. The wide variety of plants, pots and planters available gives you essentially unlimited options for creating a unique space to enjoy.

Enhance the atmosphere with elegant lighting. Lighting is often overlooked as an outdoor design element. When you want to create an inviting space that serves multiple purposes, a single wall mounted light source will probably not be sufficient. Like indoor spaces, lighting has a major effect on the atmosphere of a deck area. Solar lighting may be a good option since it eliminates the need to run wires to each fixture.

Build a pergola. If your deck does not have a shaded area to relax, socialize and dine, adding a pergola is a great way to enhance its functionality. A pergola may also help protect the wood of the deck from damage caused by UV rays.

Combine these ideas with creativity and a bit of elbow grease, and you will be well on your way converting a dull deck into an inviting and comfortable outdoor space!

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the owner of Ace Tool Online, a leading dealer and service center for hand and power tools as well as Occidental leather products. Accessibility to a variety of tools within arm’s reach allows for convenient and efficient workflow. When we think of tool belts, the traditional tool belt worn around the hips most often comes to mind. But the wide availability of beltless tool systems gives construction professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike more tool organization options than ever.

For some, wearing a regular tool belt for extended periods of time can lead to fatigue and pain in the lower back and hips. Belt free tool systems such as suspenders and vests are designed to shift the weight such that it is distributed evenly and places less strain on these parts of the body. The redistribution of weight from the hips and lower back can make carrying tools more comfortable.

Many beltless tool systems, such as several made by Occidental Leather, are designed so that optional tool bags and cases can be attached and detached depending on the needs of the wearer. This functionality provides the flexibility to carry the right amount of tools for any job, without having to carry excess weight unnecessarily. Suspender and vest tool systems have more space for pockets and pouches than traditional tool belts and can be less bulky as well.

Whether a traditional tool belt or a belt free tool belt system is the right choice for you depends on your needs and preferences. Many professionals have more than one tool belt for use in different situations. A tool belt may be the better choice for small jobs that do not require many tools or much time, while a belt free system may be more comfortable for lengthy and labor intensive projects such as home construction. If a traditional tool belt causes you pain or discomfort, or you find yourself in need of more storage compartments than is afforded by a tool belt, you may benefit from trying a belt free tool system.

About the Author: Maria Polidoro is the Founder of Ace Tool Online, an authorized distributor of hand and power tools from virtually all major power tool manufacturers and a provider of Occidental leather products including beltless tool systems.
