The Benefits of Carbide Tipped Tools

Carbide (also known as titanium carbide or tungsten carbide) is a chemical compound that is commonly used for tipping cutting tools. Carbide is hard and durable, but most importantly, it stays sharp for longer periods of time than most other metals. While too brittle and expensive to be used for the entire tool body, carbide is the ideal tip for saws blades, routers, lathe bits, and drill bits. I recommend seeking out carbide tipped saw blades and routers if you plan on doing serious metal or wood working. The following is some basic information you should know before considering or selecting a carbide-tipped tool.

Carbide is both highly heat resistant (melting point of 2,870 °C / 5,200 °F) and extremely hard (8.5–9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.)

Carbide tipped saw blades have a longer “tool life” than basic steel tools because of their extreme durability. This is especially relevant for higher speeds and feeds associated with more aggressive machining. If you plan on using your tool frequently on hard or dense materials, carbide tips are a must.

Carbide tipped tools are slightly more expensive, but they stay sharp anywhere from ten to twenty times longer than a simple steel tip.

Carbide tips are also less likely to crater when machining more abrasive materials.

Because of its strength, carbide sharpening requires a specific type of abrasive, preferably something coated in diamond or a carbide abrasive wheel.

C-2 carbide tips are used for cutting non-ferrous materials such as cast iron.

C-5 carbide tips are used for cutting steel materials.

Holiday Decorations – Part II - The Indoors Edition

The holiday season would not be complete without a little home decoration celebrating the season. Here are some tips for making your home festive.

Just because it’s old, doesn’t mean it’s lost its luster. Every year stores push new holiday décor. If your budget permits and you feel the need, you can always buy new decorations, but I am a firm believer that decorations become more valuable the longer they are with your family.

Think about your home and select décor that fits in. Whether your home is traditional or modern, it’s best to choose decorations that meld well with your home’s personality and color scheme. For example, use twinkly glass, silver and white lights in a more modern, white-wall environment. Likewise, coppers, bronzes and golds will enhance an earth tone abode. If your home is more contemporary, using repetition and symmetry with decorations has a really nice impact. For example, 5 glass Christmas trees in various sizes looks both festive and modern. For more traditional homes, I suggest using nostalgic items in whimsical colors to add some holiday charm to the space.

Hang lights indoors. Christmas lights have a way of transforming a room. You can use the same technique as outdoors lights by using simple light clips or hooks. Be forewarned, you may need to caulk some holes when the holidays eventually pass. A better option may be temporary adhesive hooks (they even make suction cup hooks for windows), though these occasionally pop off at random moments so be prepared for a little upkeep.

Use nature to celebrate the holidays. Gather branches and pine cones and display them with ornaments and ribbons around your home. Choose red and white flowers to give greenery some contrast. Put cranberries and water in a glass bowl or vase and float a few candles on top.

Don’t be afraid of color. Red and green are traditional, convenient and easy, but it’s more visually interesting to have some color variety. Metallics and gem colors looks great mixed in. After all, you want to look like a home, not a theme corner at a department store.

Choose a few focal points. Choose a spot or two, such as the tree, a table, or the fireplace mantel, to draw focus to. Increase the texture and color found in that area.

Holiday Decorations – Part I - The Outdoors Edition

The holiday season is upon us, and of all the traditions, holiday decorating is one of the most fun to do with your family. Here are a few tips to make outdoors holiday decorating a successful, head-ache free process.

Take stock of the outdoor space you are decorating. It’s easy to just jump into decorating, but chances are you’ll get something wrong and regret it. Avoid that frustration by doing a quick walk through of the yard. This will help you know where your power sources are and how you want to organize your décor. This is also a good time to check that all your electrical outlets are working.

Sparkly is good, sparks flying are not. Don’t be afraid to retire some of your older, broken decorations, especially very old electronic ones as they may pose a fire hazard.

Light up the neighborhood. Outdoor lights are probably my favorite aspect of holiday décor. Besides the strands of lights (use LED lights if you can as they last longer), you will need light clips, nail on wire clips, some heavy duty extension cord, a hammer or cordless drill, and a tape measure. Secure roof decorations. Trust me, the last thing you want is to see this holiday season is your plastic Santa flying off the roof and conking your neighbor. Make sure anything rooftop is securely tied down and can resist strong winter winds.

Get Creative. You can easily cut and paint wooden silhouettes for the front yard. Local craft stores offer inexpensive patterns. Simply trace a pencil around the silhouette on some ply board, use a hand held jig saw to cut out the image, then paint the board anyway you want. You can make these cute, nostalgic, religious, or even funny… just make sure it reflects your family’s personality.

Keep the snow line in mind. If you live in a snowy area, keep in mind that lawn statues may be covered at some point. Elevate statues on boxes or crates to avoid being covered. Of course, if the snowfall is minimal, you can also simply dig them out and resituate them.

Easy Home Storage Projects, Part II: Building a Floating Wall Shelf

When it comes to home storage, floating wall shelves are incredibly versatile. They can be added just about anywhere, from the garage to your living room, bathroom, bedrooms or kitchen. Line the shelves with storage baskets to conceal clutter, or display decorative items, children’s toys, or books. The options are virtually endless. Plus, floating shelves can be finished in a multitude of ways to accommodate any decor. Use a bright paint color to contrast the wall and have a modern pop, or use a classic wood stain to create a rustic, traditional feel. Creating floating wall shelves is such a simple carpentry project, that even a novice can tackle it.

All you need for this project is wood, a tape measure, sandpaper, a leveler, a jig saw, L brackets, varnish, and wood stain or paint and paint brushes. When you are ready to go, simply follow these instructions:

First you must determine the shelving dimensions. The standard thickness for a shelf is 1”, but you can create shelves of any length or width, depending on your needs and the space you have.

Once you have determined the dimensions, measure the wall space with your tap measure, transfer the measurement to the wood, and then cut the wood to the required length using the jig saw.

Use the sand paper to smooth out the jagged edge left behind by the jig saw. This will give your shelf a clean, smooth finish. If the wood is jagged on other edges, smooth those out as well.

Stain or paint the entire shelf before attaching it to the wall. Wood may require more than one coat of paint. Be sure to let the paint dry completely before applying a second coat.

Once the paint or stain is completely dry, apply varnish. This will give the shelf a protective finish that minimizes day-to-day wear and tear. If you want the shelf to be glossy, apply a second coat of varnish. You should gently sand the shelf between varnish coats to ensure a smooth finish.

Attach the L brackets to the shelf first. I recommend spacing them every 24” for a stronger, more stable shelf.

Now attach the shelf to the wall. I recommend using a leveler to ensure the shelf is perfectly even.

I am a firm believer that you can never have too much home storage. After all, you can only pile everything into the garage for so long before you can no longer park the car in there. Here is a quick list of inexpensive home storage projects that will make life a little easier and maybe even make some room for your car in the garage.

Invest in multifunctional furniture. Some favorites of mine include ottomans with secret storage compartments, beds with built-in drawers, and the classic Murphy bed which tucks away into the wall, making your guest room twice as functional.

Add hooks to doors and unused wall space. These can be used for belts, ties or shoes in the bedroom, and towels or dishrags in the bathroom and kitchen.

Slide storage boxes under your beds. Attach some wheels for extra convenience.

Store away bed linens in old chests or trunks, then use the trunk as a stylish end-table.

Use pull-out shelves or baskets in deeper cabinets and stackable storage pieces in taller cabinets. These inexpensive additions will allow you to use every inch of your cupboards.

Hang a pot rack in the kitchen and free up significant cabinet space.

Place decorative canisters on the kitchen counter for storing frequently used foodstuff like coffee beans and sugar.

Suspend wineglass racks under cabinets to display your stemware or decorative china. You can also under mount paper towel dispensers and can openers.

Put an inexpensive wine rack in the bathroom to store rolled up towels.

Add sturdy shelving and cabinets to the garage walls. In fact, a basic cabinet can be used just about anywhere to create instant storage. How to Choose the Right Plunge Cut Saw

Plunge cut saws are a must-have for any serious carpenter. When a project calls for cutting a straight line, pairing a quality plunge cut saw with a guide rail will get you excellent results. There are three key factors to consider when selecting your plunge saw: quality, power, and safety.

Quality

I am a big advocate for quality tools. Too many times I have seen quality sacrificed for price… and time and time again, the tool breaks prematurely and the woodworker is forced to purchase a replacement. Besides being a pain, it ends up costing more in the long run. If you truly need your tools, you should not sacrifice quality. Look for good design, superior materials and construction, and a solid warranty. When you test the saw, check for tight tolerances and a smooth plunging action. Make sure the cuts have splinter-free edges and that there are no burn marks left behind.

There are plenty of times when brand name is not an important factor to consider, but this is not one of them. Brand reputation is important. Festool Tools is a personal favorite of mine, but I recommend doing your research. Ask experienced carpenters you know who they are using and whether they are happy. Check around the web and see what people are saying on the message boards about the brand’s service department so you want to buy from a manufacturer that stands behind its tools.

Quality rails are important too. They should be strong, light, and easy to adjust.

Power

This overlaps with quality, but a strong, reliable motor is important when selecting a plunge cut saw. Consider the kinds of material you will be working with most often. If you frequently work with thick, hard woods, more power will be required. If you are working with lightweight materials, a smaller, lighter saw will work just fine. Power ratings can be misleading because some less reputable saw manufacturers only list the peak power of their tool. You need to know the saw’s "continuous power rating under load." That will tell you the true power of the saw while in use.

Safety

Make sure your saw has anti-kickback protection.

I also recommend choosing a saw with Multiple Material Control (MMC) because it offers additional safety as well as performance. MMC allows you precision control over speed and protects the motor from overload and temperature. It also allows you to choose the optimum speed for the type of blade you are using.

An Introduction to Circular Saws

A good circular saw is critical to any serious woodworker and the go-to electric tool for most carpenters. The circular saw’s versatility is partially due to the fact that it can be either table mounted or hand held. For straight cuts, it is recommended that a circular saw be clamped to the wood with a straightedge. This will give you a straight cut akin to a table or miter saw. A quality circular saw will also allow you to adjust the cut depth and angle of the cut.

When choosing a circular saw, there are three central questions you must ask:

What kind of cutting power do you really need? There are two primary types of circular saws to choose from: worm-drive saws and sidewinder saws (also known as in-line saws). The big difference between the two is where the motor is situated and the torque that the motor placement provides.

On a worm-drive saw the motor is placed parallel to the blade which gives the saw considerable power. A worm-drive saw can cut through just about anything, even concrete, making it a popular choice for professional tradesmen. In fact, I would recommend that only professionals use worm-drive saws because of the inherent danger of wielding such a powerful tool.

If you are a more of a hobbyist, the sidewinder is a better alternative. Also known as an in-line saw, it also comes in two varieties, regular and small. A small sidewinder is a good pick for slighter body frames or people who prefer a lighter weight tool. While we are on the topic of safety, I cannot stress enough how important power tool safety is. Be sure to always wear protective gear! Also, I highly recommend a saw that features electric brakes. These “brakes” will reverse electricity flow when the trigger is released. This stops the blade in about two seconds flat and really improves the overall safety of the tool.

Is portability important? Electrical power tools can be cumbersome on the work site. If you want your circular saw to have maximum agility, I would recommend a cordless version. Cordless circular saws eliminate the inconveniences of lunging around extension cords and generators allowing you to easily navigate around a job and save time. With the cordless variety you will have to sacrifice some torque. Also, keep in mind that there is a time limit to any battery.

What kind of features matter to you? Think about the types of projects you plan on doing that will require a circular saw. How deep do your cuts need to be? The saw’s blade capacity dictates the depth of the cut. Obviously, larger blades cut deeper, so make sure the blade is large enough to accommodate your project plans. Now consider how often you will need to change out the saw blade. Will you need to make different depth cuts and change blades frequently? If so, shaft locks make blade changes fast and easy and are worth looking for if you foresee having to make a lot of blade changes.

It is important to consider the psychology behind how prospective customers select a contractor. If you have a better understanding of your potential client and how they approach the decision making process, you are better equipped to attract their business. My research in this area points to an over-arching theme of consumer fear. The prospects are anxious because, to them, a home remodel is a really big deal. If you are selected, they will pay you a lot of money to do some pretty scary things (well, it’s scary to them) to their largest personal asset. Find ways to address this fear, and you will provide them with a sense of comfort and attract more business. Here are a few tips on how to do just that.

Be patient and answer questions. Question dodging is a clear sign to the buyer that something’s not right.

Be knowledgeable about the process and give them a realistic cost job breakdown.

Provide glowing references.

Be insured and licensed (when appropriate) and be ready to present relevant certifications upon request.

Be punctual to appointments. When you are late, the customer may get that sinking feeling that something’s not “right”. A little bit of doubt can quickly snowball into full blown distrust.

Do not use high pressure sales tactics. This will trigger the buyers fight or flight instinct… Either way, you lose. It is best to present yourself as a knowledgeable ally. Act as though you don’t have to sell hard because your reputation speaks for itself.

You are a professional, act the part. Be polite and have a tidy appearance. Demonstrate that you have an attention for detail by taking good care of your tools and vehicle.

Provide the right paperwork, execute change orders, and return client calls promptly. Long delays in any of these activities will trigger client anxiety.

Leave the job site clean after each work day.

Have good communication. Provide a detailed overview of the work to be completed address the “who, what, when, where and why” of all main aspects of the project, including the important milestones. Always let the client know when utilities will be down.

Bottom line, your potential clients are afraid and they do not trust you. You can earn that trust through certain behaviors and tactics. If you can accomplish that, the business will roll in.

As the weather cools, many families are forced indoors during chilly evenings, which is a shame because fall is a beautiful season that should be enjoyed. There are a few fairly fast and easy ways to make your outdoor area more hospitable in the cooler months. All you need to do is organize the yard so that wind and moisture are minimized, and extra warmth is provided. Here are a few tips to make the most of your yard during the cooler seasons and well into spring.

Create a shelter belt. If your outdoor space or patio is highly exposed, determine where most of your frosty winds are blowing from and build a barrier in that vicinity. The most effective barrier is a fence, but if this is a view you do not want to obstruct, small hedges, open-weave fences, and tough trees can help reduce the wind’s severity without blocking the landscape. This barrier will not only make outdoor activities more comfortable, but it can also reduce home heating costs.

Install a heating device. Patio heaters, chimineas, fire pits, or fireplaces are all excellent options for adding a bit of heat to the vicinity. A retractable canopy will allow you to keep the area dry and also view the stars on clear nights.

Now that you have the space, use it! Plan activities, invite over friends, and keep extra marshmallows or hot beverages handy for spontaneous evenings. A nice outdoor gathering area will give your family a delightful place to socialize without the distractions of TV or modern life.

Taking a few precautions to winterize your home before the cold temperatures roll in can boost your home’s energy efficiency for the winter and prevent unnecessary headaches in the frigid months to come. Here are some areas of your home you may want to check before the first winter frost:

Windows: Poorly sealed or thin windows allow cold outside air into your home, increasing the workload of your heating system and driving energy costs higher. Replace an Outdated Mirror for an Instant Bathroom Update

These days, bathroom designers are moving away from the flat wall mirrors that have been a mainstay in home construction for years. Instead, they are springing for a modernized style with smaller framed or decorative mirrors. Replacing an outdated mirror is a simple and inexpensive way to give your bathroom an instant update.

Removing a flat bathroom mirror relatively basic as far as home improvement projects go, but it does require patience, preparation and at least one other person to lend an extra helping hand. Removing an attached bathroom mirror without breakage is possible, but precautions should be taken to prevent injury and damage to the bathroom in the event that the mirror breaks. Though we discuss one method of removing a bathroom mirror here, there are several different ways you could go about this project.

Safety
Safety should not be taken lightly when removing a mirror. Safety goggles and thick gloves should be worn, as well as long sleeves and pants to help protect the skin. One person should hold the mirror against the wall while another is attempting to loosen or remove the mirror. Every step of the process should be completed slowly and steadily to reduce the chance of breakage and injury.

Preparation
To prepare for possible breakage, cover the entire mirror with a wide tape such as masking tape or duct tape. Doing so reduces the chance of injury or damage caused by shattered glass. Cover other surfaces in the bathroom to prevent damage and facilitate easier cleanup.

Removal
To remove the mirror, the first step is determining whether the mirror is affixed to the wall with brackets or glue. If the mirror is held by brackets only, one person can push the mirror up toward the top brackets, holding the mirror firmly against the wall, while another carefully removes the bottom brackets. Two or more people can then lower the mirror and carefully release it before removing the upper brackets from the wall.

Most bathroom mirrors are attached with an adhesive. In this case, one technique is to slide shims behind the mirror wherever possible to begin separating the mirror from the wall, and then soften the adhesive with heat. Apply heat to the mirror using a heat gun, or if that is unavailable, a hair dryer should do the trick. Apply heat around the edges of the mirror first, which should soften the adhesive and allow you to insert the shims further or add more. A crowbar can be used to very carefully pry the mirror from the wall in very small increments, gradually working from one end to the other, increasing the thickness of the shims when possible. If you continue to add heat and slowly increase the pressure created by the shims, you and your helper(s) should be able to remove the mirror in one piece.

Once the mirror is down, you can get a better idea of the wall surface you have to work with. Touch ups will be needed before you can paint the wall and apply your new mirror for a modernized look. Now all you have to do is hang your new mirror and you have a brand new look in your bathroom!

Many homeowners today aim to incorporate more energy efficiency into home updates and renovations. One relatively simple update that can help save on energy consumption and cost is a tankless water heater. These water heaters utilize a less wasteful method of providing a home with heated water and take up less space in the home than do traditional storage tank water heaters.

A standard water heater keeps a storage tank full of heated water ready, and refills and heats water as it is used or when the temperature falls below a specified minimum level. If the water reaches the minimum temperature before it is used, it is reheated so that a certain temperature is maintained within the tank. It is apparent how a lot of energy can be wasted as unused water is heated and reheated in such a system.

As the name implies, a tankless water heater is a unit used to heat water that has no reservoir. Sometimes called demand water heaters, tankless heaters only heat water when it is needed. When the faucet is turned on, water is moved to the tankless heater, where it is heated, then on to the faucet for use. Tankless water heaters have different capacities, so you can install one large enough to heat all of the water for your home or small enough to cover just one bathroom or even one faucet. Tankless water heaters of different capacities essentially increase the water temperature based on its flow rate, so for instance less water would be heated for a faucet than for a bathtub faucet.

Installing a Kitchen Backsplash – Part III: Installing the Backsplash

Before beginning to install a tile backsplash, it is advisable to read all manufacturer documentation for the tile, grout and other supplies to be used. This will help ensure that you have sufficient quantities of supplies on hand to finish the project, and confirm that the materials you are using are recommended for use with one another. Reading all instructions and recommendations will provide additional insight such as the appropriate trowel to use for your project and whether the tile and grout need to be sealed.

Many experienced tile installers prefer to use mastic as the base adhesive for a vertical backsplash, though your tile may call for a particular type of adhesive. Before adhesive is applied, the wall on which the backsplash will be installed should be lightly sanded and the dust removed to create a rougher surface for the adhesive. The container for the thinset or mastic should designate the appropriate type of trowel to be used in its application.

The backsplash area should be measured, and the first tiles applied at what will be the center of the backsplash. Tiles should be applied to the wall in small sections at a time to prevent premature drying of the adhesive. Tiles should be secured to the adhesive using a twisting motion, with each being checked to ensure that it is level and evenly spaced from adjacent tiles. Inserting spacers is an easy way to achieve consistent spacing between tiles.

As you install tile after tile, you will encounter areas that require tiles to be cut, such as to fit around an electrical outlet. Cutting tiles as you reach such areas, rather than ahead of time, can help ensure the best fit.

Once the backsplash design is complete, the adhesive should be allowed to dry before grout is applied. Grout should be used in small batches so that it does not dry too quickly. Apply grout as described on the product package, wiping excess grout from the tile surface with a clean, moist sponge as you go.

As the grout dries, a film will likely form across the surface of the backsplash. This film can be removed with a soft cloth. To finalize your backsplash, seal the tile and grout if it is recommended for the materials you are using.

Circular saws are quite versatile and efficient tools when used properly, but can pose a serious safety hazard if used incorrectly. Here are five mistakes to avoid when operating a circular saw:

Failing to wear the appropriate safety attire. While we wish it went without saying that safety goggles should always be worn when working with a circular saw, many people neglect to follow this basic safety rule.
